The TSH test measures the thyroid stimulating hormone and how well your thyroid is working. The test measures the levels of these hormones. An abnormal result will trigger further testing by the lab (free T3 and T4).
TSH is produced in the pituitary gland and it tells the thyroid how much hormone it needs to make.
Your thyroid regulates how the body uses energy and plays an important role in regulating your weight, body temperature, muscle strength, and mood.
The pituitary gland produces more thyroid stimulating hormone if thyroid hormone levels in your blood are too low. When thyroid hormone levels are too high, the pituitary gland makes little or no thyroid stimulating hormone. You can determine whether your thyroid produces enough thyroid hormones by measuring TSH levels in your blood.
The TSH test can help diagnose hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism (too much or too little thyroid, respectively).
